Equity and quality in the Somali educational system (08 May 2023)

The second workshop was held on Monday 8th May 2023. The goal of the workshop is to learn more about quality and equity in the Somali educational system. The meeting was an opportunity for all the participants to further contribute to the development of education in Somalia and to learn about specific teacher education topics, and for sharing of ideas and co-creation of knowledge among interest groups.

The workshop had two presentations that provided a starting point for active discussion. The workshop is for teaching staff at the Somali National University. The workshop is organized by the University of Helsinki as part of the Global Innovation Network for Teaching and Learning (GINTL) project.

The opening ceremony of the training workshop for the Somali National University teachers was

held on Saturday, 3/8/2024. All faculty members at the university will benefit from this training, but the training has been started with faculty members in the faculties of Science, Veterinary and Agriculture. The number of trainees participating in the training from the three faculties mentioned above is approximately 104 trainees.

The training has been provided by qualified trainers, namely:

At the opening ceremony of the course – in the presence of the Vice rector of the University for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Abdullahi Sheikh Rashid and Professor Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdi, Dean of the faculty of Education, several speeches were given.

In this context, the Vice rector of the University for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Abdullahi Sheikh Rashid, said after welcoming the guests: The Somali National University is proud to launch courses in teaching methods for university teachers to develop their skills and enhance their capabilities in terms of quantity and quality.

In his speech, the Dean of the faculty of Education pointed out the importance of continuous learning, stressing that obtaining a scientific degree is not the end of the learning process, and that such courses are an important opportunity to develop cognitive and scientific capabilities, and to enhance the educational process in educational centers and educate students with modern sciences and innovations.

Preparing for the new academic year 2024/2025

Members of the administration and lecturers of the Faculty of Education at the Somali National University held a meeting on 12.09.2024 at the Shabelle Campus. The meeting, which aims to prepare for the new academic year 2024/2025, was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdi, while the heads of the departments and lecturers at the faculty played a prominent role in the progress and success of the meeting.

The focus was on to discuss the completion of all preparations for the new academic year, through periodic follow-up as well as continuous follow-up within the various departments, and developing a plan to receive new and old students at the faculty of Education. At the beginning, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdi stressed the importance of following up on work and completing all arrangements and preparations before the start of the new academic year and the necessity of providing an appropriate educational environment for students to achieve maximum benefit in serving the educational process. A number of department heads also pointed out the importance of the teacher being prepared at the beginning of the academic year  to provide the various needs of students and ensuring attendance at the specified time and being a role model for their students.

Stakeholder Consultation Seminar for the Development of Somali National University (SNU) Teacher Education Curriculum/Program (29 March 2022)

The consultation seminar was held so as to spur discussions on potential, current and previous contributions towards teacher education in Somalia. The seminar brought together higher education partners and non-governmental organizations in an attempt to forge a way ahead that would lead to better and sustainable partnerships, cooperation and projects in strengthening Somalia’s higher education sector with particular emphasis on teacher education. The seminar also facilitated discussions on improving and maintaining current partnerships while deliberating on future projects.

Objectives of the Seminar

The chief goal of the seminar was to bring together different stakeholders, actors and partners in the education sector so as to facilitate information sharing, exchange of expertise, and to provide impetus for future collaboration and cooperation among partners and actors in the field. The specific objectives of the seminar were to:

  1. Exchange experiences and ideas with different stakeholders and actors to develop and improve SNU’s teacher education curriculum/program.
  2. Discuss the goals, expectations and needs sought by the concerned parties.
  3. Create common expectations and find a sound basis for collaboration in the future projects between the different stakeholders.
  4. Increase efforts towards continuation of the development efforts at SNU and strengthen cooperation between SNU and UH.

Date and Venue of the Seminar

The seminar was held on 29th March 2022 online via Zoom. Participants of the seminar logged on from Finland, Somalia, and Kenya.

Towards high quality and equal teacher education in Somalia (06 February 2023)

The workshop towards high-quality and equal teacher education in Somalia was organized by the University of Helsinki in cooperation with a number of partners mentioned in this report, with support and funding of Global Innovation Network for Teaching and Learning (GINTL). The workshop stimulated discussions about potential, current and future contributions to teacher education in Somalia. It brought together higher education partners in Finnish universities and Somali universities in an effort to expand cooperation and forge a way forward that would lead to better and sustainable partnerships, collaborations and projects in strengthening the higher education sector in Somalia.

 

In addition to the above, the topics discussed and addressed in the workshop helped the participants gain a greater understanding of the current challenges that hinder quality and equity in education, and thus share the best ways to achieve them. These discussions and exchange of experiences would achieve Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals which is part of the strategic vision of GINTL’s cooperation with higher education institutions in Africa.

The aim of the workshop​

The workshop aimed to achieve the following objectives:

  • To provide an opportunity to learn about and explore quality and equity issues in the Somali educational systems.
  • To provide a starting point for further work on developing the somali (teacher) education in terms of equity and quality matters.

Date and Venue of the Seminar

The workshop was held on 06th February 2023 at 9:00-12:00 online via Zoom. Participants logged on from Finland and Somalia. However, the presence of the participants from Somali National University gathered in a hall in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. So, the interaction was lively, active and face to face between the participants in the hall.
