About The Faculty
The Faculty of Education, formerly Lafoole College of Education, was established in 1963 as the National Teacher Education Center with an initial enrollment of 60 students. It has since grown to accommodate over 1,000 students, expanding its facilities with additional classrooms, libraries, and laboratories.
Initially, the college offered a four-year program, which was later condensed to two years in the 1970s to meet the growing demand for trained teachers. In 1983, the four-year program was reinstated, with a revised curriculum that included practical teaching experiences.
The Faculty was instrumental in providing quality teacher education until 1991, when it ceased operations due to Somalia’s civil war. After a 25-year hiatus, it reopened in 2014 as part of the Somali National University, offering programs in Biology & Chemistry, English & History, and Mathematics & Physics. A two-year diploma in primary education was introduced in 2016 but later discontinued. At the beginning of 2019, a Bachelor in Social Work (BSW) was started, however, it was discontinued after the opening of a new faculty specializing in social sciences in the year 2020. In 2022, a Geography & History major was added to train secondary school teachers.
Currently, the Faculty offers five undergraduate programs, combining academic knowledge, intellectual, professional capacity with practical experience to prepare students for careers in education.
